German is the official language of instruction. The academic year typically runs from August/September to June/July. Germany is internationally renowned for its dual vocational training system (Ausbildung) and its research-intensive universities. Germany has adopted the Bologna Process, restructuring university degrees into Bachelor's and Master's programs.
Covers German, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Arts, Music, and Physical Education. At the end of Grade 4, teachers recommend one of three secondary school tracks based on performance.
Three main tracks: Hauptschule (basic, vocational-oriented), Realschule (intermediate, leads to vocational training or Gymnasium), and Gymnasium (academic, university-preparatory). Some states have comprehensive schools (Gesamtschule) combining all tracks.
Culminates in the Abitur (Allgemeine Hochschulreife) — the university entrance qualification. The Abitur requires passing examinations in 4–5 subjects including German, Mathematics, and a foreign language. It is one of the most rigorous secondary qualifications in Europe.
Germany's dual system combines apprenticeship training (2–3.5 years) with vocational school. Culminates in a Chamber of Commerce certificate recognized across industry. Highly regarded internationally.
Germany has world-class universities including LMU Munich, TU Munich, Heidelberg, and Humboldt Berlin. Bachelor's degrees take 3 years. Master's degrees are 2 years. Many programs are taught in English. Public university tuition is very low or free.
