Apply Now →Ghana follows a 12-year system of basic and secondary education regulated by the Ghana Education Service (GES) under the Ministry of Education. English is the official language of instruction throughout all levels. The academic year runs from September to July. Ghana's education system has undergone significant reform, including the introduction of free Senior High School (SHS) education in 2017. Ghana is one of the most stable and educationally advanced countries in West Africa.
Includes 2 years of Kindergarten (KG), 6 years of Primary School (Primary 1–6), and 3 years of Junior High School (JHS 1–3). Culminates in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) at JHS3, administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
Free since 2017. Students choose General Arts, General Science, Business, Visual Arts, Home Economics, or Technical/Vocational programs. Culminates in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), administered by WAEC. Passing with credits in 6 subjects including English and Mathematics is required for university admission.
University of Ghana (Legon) is the flagship institution. Bachelor's degrees take 3–4 years. Major universities include Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and University of Cape Coast. Master's degrees are 1–2 years.
