English is the official language of instruction, with Jamaican Creole (Patois) widely spoken. The academic year runs from September to June. Jamaica's education system is modeled on the British system and produces qualifications through the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC). Jamaica has a significant diaspora population in the United States, and Jamaican credential evaluations are frequently requested for US immigration and professional licensing.
Pre-primary education including Basic Schools and Infant Departments.
Compulsory. Covers Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Physical Education. At Grade 4, students sit the Grade Four Literacy Test. At Grade 6, students sit the Primary Exit Profile (PEP) examination for secondary school placement.
Culminates in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations administered by the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) at Grade 11. A minimum of 5 CSEC passes including English Language and Mathematics is required for further education and most employment.
Culminates in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) — equivalent to A-Levels, required for university admission.
The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus is the main institution. Bachelor's degrees take 3 years. The University of Technology (UTech) and Northern Caribbean University are also major institutions.
