English is the primary language of instruction, with Māori medium education (kura kaupapa Māori) also available. The academic year runs from late January to December. New Zealand has a decentralized education system where schools have significant autonomy over curriculum delivery. New Zealand universities are internationally recognized, and the country uses the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF) to classify all qualifications.
Compulsory from age 6. Covers English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health and PE, The Arts, and Technology. No national public examination at this stage.
Covers the same curriculum areas with increased specialization. Some schools integrate Years 7–13.
From Year 11, students work towards the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) administered by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). NCEA Level 1 (Year 11), Level 2 (Year 12), and Level 3 (Year 13) with endorsements (Merit/Excellence). NCEA Level 3 with University Entrance (UE) is required for university admission.
University of Auckland, University of Otago, Victoria University of Wellington, and Canterbury are major institutions. Bachelor's degrees take 3 years. Honours Bachelor's degrees are 4 years. Master's degrees are 1–2 years. PhD programs are 3 years.
