English is the primary language of instruction, with Welsh medium instruction available in Wales. The academic year runs from September to June. The UK has some of the world's most prestigious universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, and the London School of Economics. UK qualifications are globally recognized and widely evaluated for US admissions and immigration purposes.
Key Stage 1 (Ages 5–7) and Key Stage 2 (Ages 7–11) in England. Covers English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Arts, Music, and Physical Education. No national public examination; SATs assessments used internally.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9) and Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11). Culminates in the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) examinations at Year 11 (age 16), administered by AQA, Edexcel, or OCR. Students typically sit 8–10 GCSEs.
Students choose 3–4 subjects for Advanced Level (A-Level) study. Culminates in A-Level examinations — the primary qualification for UK university admission. Equivalent to the final years of US high school plus some college-level work.
Scotland uses National 5 (equivalent to GCSE), Higher, and Advanced Higher qualifications administered by SQA. Scottish Bachelor's degrees are typically 4 years (vs 3 in England).
Bachelor's degrees take 3 years in England/Wales (4 in Scotland). Master's degrees are 1 year (UK) vs 2 years (US). Oxford and Cambridge use collegiate systems. The UK has a strong postgraduate research tradition.
